5C FORMATTING DISKS AND COPYING SOFTWARE (DISK 9)

Before a new disk can record (store) any data, it first must be told how to record this data

(called formatting the disk). Run the following formatting procedure on any new disk, or

on “re-cycled” disks previously used with other systems (such as home computers) since

these will not be formatted correctly for the SP-1200.

Note: Formatting a disk that already contains data will “bulk erase” any data on the disk

being formatted and replace it with the sounds, sequences and software currently in RAM.

Always check that disks are either blank, or contain nothing you want to save, before

formatting. A disk need only be formatted once unless you want to use the “bulk erase”

aspect of formatting.

We recommend using 3.5" double-sided, double-density microfloppy disks. Avoid bargain

disks; stick to name brands. Buying in quantity can save you lots of money, so get together

with other SP-1200 or personal computer owners and do group disk purchases for substan-

tial discounts.

Copying software involves “updating” the computer program that makes the SP-1200

work. From time to time we will make improvements such as adding a new feature or

correcting a problem that has been discovered. Because the program or software resides on

the disks, updating the SP-1200 is simply a matter of loading in a new disk and copying the

software to all your other disks!
